Design Trends for 2023

Once again, the holiday season has passed us quickly and the new year is upon us! The new year is always the perfect time to upgrade our lives- whether it be the way we take care of our bodies, our career paths, or even how we design our homes! Trends come and go but in these past few post-pandemic years, we have seen a consistent vibe of home as sanctuary. During lockdown, everyone was confined to their homes, which created a need for separation of work and home life and a natural desire to bring the outdoors in. People consumed more media and with all of the scary news that was happening in the world, people were nostalgic for happier times. This yearning combined with the millennial generation dominating social platforms, created a nostalgia for the past, especially the 90’s an early 2000’s. Not only did this affect fashion and beauty, but it trickled into interior design! Read on to see the upcoming trends for this year!

Holistic Design

Holistic design focuses on using the elements of design to bring peace and feelings of well-being. For color palette, shades of green, blue, and purple set a natural and calming vibe. For decor, keeping it minimal will add to the zen vibe. Think crystals, plants, etc. Sustainability is also part of the holistic approach- try to use earth-friendly materials that feel great against the skin; cotton sheets, jute rugs, etc. These little details make such a huge difference, especially in a post-pandemic world where home is sanctuary.

Eco-Consciousness

This one relates to the holistic approach in some ways. With Eco-conscious homes, the importance is in using sustainable materials/items. Plants purify the air while adding beauty and nature to your space. Furniture can be recycled instead of thrown out- think stools as side tables and benches as shoe shelves, etc. There are so many eco-friendly materials out there to use vs toxic plastics!

Flexible Spaces

With the housing market changing constantly in post-covid times- many are afraid to buy right now. Mix that with many people now working from home- there’s bound to be a need for multi-use spaces, just like during lockdown. This is especially a great option for people with smaller spaces. Some efficient combos include a guest room/office, a home-gym/relaxation room, a laundry/craft room, or a library/bar room!

Nostalgic Vibes

The 1990’s and 2000’s are coming back! As mentioned above, the need for nostalgia mixed with millennial social media culture lead to the revival of this time period. You will notice it in fashion, beauty, music, set design and alas- interior design! So many rental properties have transformed their aesthetic to match the vibe and its a great sales tactic. There are ways to incorporate the vibe into your own home in subtle ways. For example, instead of a full-on 90’s house, you could focus on one area- such as just the paint palette, just the accessories, or just one room. The 90’s and 2000’s had a variety of color palettes- however the themes that stuck out and still work today are pastels and neon’s. For accessories, think bold, bright pieces in fun shapes and colors. This trend is sure to bring you happiness and nostalgia every time you look at it! This is sure to be most popular with rental properties!
